NAU-FUSD RPP

The NAU-FUSD Research-Practioner Partnership was formed in 2021 between researchers at Northern Arizona University and educators from W. F. Killip Elementary School in the Flagstaff Unified School District. The goal of the partnership was to introduce Native American students in elementary school to computer science through an innovative curriculum that integrated culturally-responsive pedagogy and problem-based learning to focus on understanding and measuring the Internet.

Problem-based learning that is

Culturally-Responsive & Computationally Rich

 axes

Native Americans are significantly underrepresented in computer science careers. However, studies show that early exposure to computer science allows underrepresented students to develop foundational computer science skills and consider future learning in computer science. This project is focused on developing culturally responsive pedagogy and problem-based learning for Native American students in computer science. The project will create an innovative activity focused on equity in Internet access and how the Internet works so students can learn about computer science in a meaningful context.

Our Partnerships

This project is funded by the National Science Foundation Computer Science for All Award #2122791. Our partnership involves educators and researchers from NAU School of Informatics, Computing, & Cyber Systems; NAU Center for Science Teaching and Learning; and W. F. Killip Elementary School.
